Discuss:
Good readers are able to stop and summarize what they have read.  How would you summarize Salva's journey so far?

Today, we will focus on writing a summary.  The purpose of writing a summary is to show you understand the main idea and details of what you have read.  We will use a specific summary strategy called the SWBST Summary Strategy to help us form a summary.

Let's learn more about the SWBST strategy by watching the video .

Now, work with your partner to write a summary for chapter 9.  Write 5-7 sentences using the SWBST strategy to help you.
 Water Issues in America
Do water issues exist in the US?  Watch the video and read one of the articles, "Flint's Water Crisis" or "Clean Air Act" to learn more about a social issue that our country faces.  Write a summary with the main idea and important details from the article.  Be prepared to share your summary with the class.  Then, we will compare and contrast these issues with A Long Walk to Water.
